A beautiful and classic manicure is always nice, but for those of us who want to show off a bit more of our personality or draw a bit more attention to our polished tips, we may choose to create some funky and fantastic designs to apply to our nails. Applying nail designs to our fingertips may take a bit of creativity and a steady hand, but once you get into the swing of it, you may never go back to having one shade of nail polish brushed over your nails ever again.
The first thing that you will need to consider before you even begin to apply a nail polish design is what design you will choose. There are a number of different ideas that you can use. The best way to come up with an idea on what to create is to think about what is important to you, or something that really shows your personality, or something that you are known for. Some ideas for nail designs are:
- Floral designs: what’s your favorite flower?
- Swirls and twirls: just because it’s pretty and a very neat design
- Media-related designs: this can be anything from having Pac-Man nails to painting different comic book characters on your fingertips
- Letters: these may spell out something important to you – in ten letters or less
- Bi-color or tri-color nails
- Any design can be accompanied by gems or stickers that can be applied to the nail
Once you have your idea in place, start off by applying a base coat to your fingernails before you do anything else. A base coat is essential as it will not only protect your fingernails from the colored nail polish, but it will also help the nail polish adhere to your fingernail properly and it can also strengthen your fingernails.
Now that the basecoat is on, it’s time to decide what the background shade of color should be on your nails (if any, this may not apply). You may even have different colors for different fingernails, so you will have to plan this.
When it comes to the design, you may be wondering how you can create such intricate designs with a nail polish brush. The answer is: you can’t. One way you can try to make the design is to take a toothpick, dip it in the nail polish, and then use that to create your designs. You can also purchase separate nail polish nail design pens that make applying the nail polish a snap. Easier still, you can purchase stickers that can be applied over the nail that act as a sort of stencil. All you need to do is follow the stencil with your basic nail polish, remove the sticker, and the design will basically be made for you by the sticker. It doesn’t get easier than that!
When you have finished your creative brand new nail design, it’s important to seal it in with a top coat to protect the polish and to ensure its longevity.
